Foundations of Nonfiction (January 2026 with Writing Workshops)
Currently offered through Writing Workshops. Please register directly with them here: https://writingworkshops.com/products/foundations-of-creative-nonfiction-8-week-zoom-workshop-with-christina-berke?_pos=1&_sid=d33257656&_ss=r
In The Art of Memoir Mary Karr writes, “A memoirist starts with events, then derives meaning from them.”
In this 8-week workshop, we’ll explore the ways in which techniques of narrative craft can be harnessed to impose order, or shape compelling stories out of real-life material. We’ll read examples of creative nonfiction including personal essays, narrative reportage, memoir excerpts, and flash creative nonfiction, and we’ll draft new works of our own with curated prompts.
Former students say:
“I so appreciated that Christina has a background in pedagogy, as being a good writer doesn't automatically make you a good teacher. Beyond the specific content of the course, I thought Christina was an excellent instructor because she had a grasp of people's emotional relationship to writing – which is often the biggest hurdle to putting words on a page. She wove gentle emotional coaching into her delivery of the course material and created a lovely class atmosphere for learning from both her and each-other.”
"Christina is a wonderful instructor. I appreciated her intentionality in her selection of readings, and the ways that she guided us in working through examples and applying the principles to our own creative work."
"Christina made me feel so welcomed and really sparked wonderful discussions among the students. She inspired me to write more and I am really grateful she taught the class."
“Christina was a wonderful instructor. The content we covered was very informative, and the writing prompts and reading selections she selected encouraged thoughtful class discussions. She is open to ideas from all students, and encouraging without any undue pressure, which for me resulted in a very positive and inspiring learning environment.”
